Congressman Tom Tancredo once again has called for the US to bomb Muslim holy sites in Mecca and Medina if militant Muslim terrorists attack the United States again. The ACLU of Colorado offers its repsonse below and hopes the Congressman will apologize for his remarks.
—Cathy Hazouri
Excutive Director, ACLU of Colorado
Mr. Tancredo’s outrageous remarks only serve to inflame anti-Muslim sentiments. It is clear that he cannot separate the small group of militants from the rest of the one billion plus Muslims worldwide who want peace. His rhetoric, uttered strictly in hopes of garnering shock-value media attention, attacks an entire religious population with followers living around the globe, from here in the US to Indonesia and the Middle East.
There are militants in many faiths. When a few extremist members of his own faith, Christianity, bombed bomb abortion clinics, Mr. Tancredo did not suggest bombing Jerusalem. By stirring up religious hatred for his own political gain, Mr. Tancredo is appealing to the basest human instincts – instincts that lead to denying liberties and rights to others. This is blatantly un-American. Of course, we’ll defend his right to say whatever he wants, we just urge him to consider his duty as a United States Congressman to lead in a responsible manner.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado calls on Congressman Tancredo and his advisers to stop these attacks on religion and to remember that religious liberty is the foundation upon which the U.S. was built.
